The sloths housed in the Rescued animals park are sloths rescued from illegal zoos and animal poaching. They are housed in the facility, take care of and well fed.
An animal connection program with the two-toed sloths is a unique experience, very popular among children and adults alike. A connection with the two-toed sloths is a private encounter between your ATV Roatan guide, an animal caregiver from the park, the animal itself, and your family or group.
The program consists of interactive experiences and starts with an educator giving a brief presentation on the species, particularities of the two-toed sloth you'll interact with, and the challenges these animals face in the wild.
After the presentation, the caregiver will allow him to climb around on his perch. You might get an opportunity to feed the sloths but there are no guarantees as the caregivers are the only ones who feed them. Touch contact will be allowed only in limited cases, always following the caregiver's directions.
We cannot guarantee you will get to touch or hug the sloth or guarantee any specific activities due to the needs of the animals and the variability of their behavior. The caregivers are experts in determining what is appropriate and doable based on the animal’s behavior that day. Guests may be able to hold the sloth during this encounter following the caregiver's advice.
Requirements for this activity
Participants must be at least 5 years old
Participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult
Do sloths bite people?
Sloths are absolutely capable of inflicting painful bites when they feel threatened. They possess prominent conoid teeth that wear out easily but are strong enough to poke through the skin and leave holes big enough to be seen through with the naked eyes.
Adult sloths do not hesitate to strike back when preyed upon, harassed, or when their young ones are disturbed. The ways in which sloths can be harassed by humans include, hugging, stroking, grooming, and other activities that will force physical contact with them.
During your encounter, follow closely the directions of your tour guide and the animal caregiver. Also, make sure to not do sudden moves or loud noises that could get the sloth scared when you are in the animal enclosure. No loose jewelry, sunglasses, or smoking is permitted during the interaction.
